The Author’s Guild’s 2018 (Jun. 7-Aug. 21) Authors Income Survey of 5067, published authors found that the median income for all those surveyed (whether part-time or full-time writers) declined to $6,080 in 2017; down 3% from four years ago. Author median income in the US in 2009 was $10,500.
Median income for full-time authors was $20,300, up 3% from median income in 2013, but still lower than the 25K median income of full time authors in 2009.
Many have blamed the marked decline in earnings on the digital revolution and technology platforms such as Amazon, which certainly played a significant role in the transformation of the writing industry, but there are other salient factors.
