Terrorism and counter-terrorism experts and analysts, even the genuine ones (plus the hundreds of others who mushroomed during the last years of the war in Syria), rushed to explain “Islamic State’s” (ISIS) power and ability to expand. This biased its beginning, disregarded its real defeat, and – most importantly – downplayed the major role played by Washington.
