Green Party presidential candidate, Dr. Jill Stein has recently started a massive voter recount on three of the states key to Donald J. Trump’s victory during this years presidential election, those being Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania. Such a recount effort can not be carried out, however, without massive funding, far more funding than Ms. Stein could possibly foot herself. Therefore she and her campaign organizers have set out a financial fundraiser campaign that aims to utilize grassroots donations to amass the necessary coinage. Thus far she has meet the requirements for the filing fees for Wisconsin, but has yet to raise the necessary proceeds for Michigan and Pennsylvania.
Her stated reason for bringing this initiative about was that the vote margins in all three of these states was very close and due to a lack of electronic voting systems, a recount is necessary to ensure that the system is kept honest.
What is rather peculiar about all of this is that all three of these states were crucial to Donald Trump’s victory and a loss in all three would have spelled a win for Clinton. This makes the move look like a Clinton sponsored push against Trump to attempt to overturn the results of the election. This may sound far-flung and conspiratorial but Ms. Stein and Ms. Clinton seemed to have patched up their differences of late (Stein stated during her run that a Clinton presidency would spell nuclear war). What is also highly questionable is the fact that Ms. Stein had a great deal of trouble during her presidential bid raising money, with only three million dollars raised in total for her entire presidential campaign. Yet when it comes to her voter-recount initiative she was able to generate 4.8 million dollars in just over 24 hours.
Bizarre, I think, is the appropriate word, to say nothing of the way in which the money is being allotted. That being, in uniformly sequential deposits. That doesn’t smack of the shot-gunned, highly randomized spattering of fund allotment one is more likely to see with proper grassroots donations.
Various theories have been tossed about from commentators across the political aisle, with some saying that this whole project is nothing more than a sideshow to help Stein get back in the good graces of the Clinton camp after the acidic critiques of the Green Party leader’s failed campaign. Others believe this is a attempt to steal the election from Trump with Clinton acting as Stein’s puppet-master, pulling the string from the shadows. Yet others merely believe that Stein is just very dedicated to keeping the system honest. Regardless of what your thoughts on the matter are, there does not appear to be, as yet, enough evidence to reach any kind of sanguine conclusion save for the fact that it is very, very odd.
For any of you reading this who are planning to donate to Ms. Stein’s recount efforts… well, you might want to read this first before making any kind of financial commitment. Here’s an excerpt from her website:
“We cannot guarantee a recount will happen in any of these states we are targeting. We can only pledge we will demand recounts in those states.
If we raise more than what’s needed, the surplus will also go toward election integrity efforts and to promote voting system reform.”
